Olympic Wrestling Rules

The wrestling bout will be divided into two periods of three minutes each. The break is only 30 seconds.
The nine-meter mat will be the medium where the two wrestlers will compete against each other.

In the Olympics, we rarely see victory by fall. So, the most common winning way that we’ll see in the Tokyo Olympics is victory by points. In this case, each wrestler must make their ways to score points by throwing, taking down, holding, maneuvering, and so on.

Olympics Wrestling History

Wrestling roots started in Ancient Greece. Back then, there was no weight limit, so that uneven competition often happened.

The wrestling competition in the modern Olympics took place at St. Louis in 1904, when Americans claimed every medal. Since then, wrestling is one of the staples in the Olympics competition. In 2004, women’s freestyle wrestling made its debut.

In 2012, Japan continued with its domination in women’s wrestling. Unfortunately, Japan also reigned in 2016. Now, for the upcoming Olympics, the same thing goes with Japan too. We will see them attempt to dominate as well.

Top Olympic Wrestling Teams at Tokyo Olympics

In the women’s wrestling category, we would give a top thumb for Japan. The host country will delegate their best women wrestlers to keep reigning.

Japan’s women won four gold medals in Rio. Kawai Risako has been the favorite to get the Olympic gold in 2021.
The other woman is Erica Wiebe of Canada, who took the gold in Rio. She would put her title on the line in the upcoming matches.

Then, there is also Adeline Gray of the USA, the five-time world champion that will make the competition tighter. It is going to be amazing to see them competing.
