Olympic Fencing Rules

The Fencing rules follow the format at Tokyo 2020. Male and female participants will compete in six events. There will be a team and individual competition.

In the overall competitions, there are three official weapons that the participants will use: epee, sabre, and foil.

In the Individual event, the single-elimination format will be there to dictate the competitors.

Meanwhile, there is also the team event. Each team has three members and one reserve member. They will compete in the round-robin format.

Olympics Fencing History

Fencing has been in the Olympic Games since 1896. It started with male only competitions. Back then, there were only two allowed weapons: sabre, and foil.

The debut of the female’s individual foil made its way to Paris in 1924.

But it was only there until individual epee for women took part in Atlanta in 1996, making its category the first time. The sabre is the youngest one in women’s individual fencing competition since it only started at Athens 2004 Olympics games.

Tokyo Olympics 2021 will hold the complete fencing events.
