Olympic Judo Rules

There are 386 athletes in total to participate in the Olympic Judo. Therefore, 193 men and 193 women will qualify.

There are 28 judokas in each weight class. Each country can only enter one athlete per weight class.

The single-elimination tournament will be the main format of the 2021 judo competitions. There will be two tables in the field. The winner from both tables will advance to the next level on attaining the gold medal match.

There will be eight judokas in each weight class that will be seeded to avoid top competitors fighting in early competition.

There will be a mixed team event, which debuts in the Tokyo 2020 Games in 2021.

Olympics Judo History

Olympic Judo’s first appearance was in Tokyo in 1964. But then, it was absent in 1968. After the absence, nothing could stop Judo from being the staple sport in the Olympic competitions.

Since then, Judo has been recognized in the world. Every time you see the Olympics, you will see Judo as part of the sports competitions.
