Olympic Weightlifting Rules

The rules and scoring in the weightlifting discipline are pretty similar to the rules applied in common competitions. For instance, the weightlifter will need to get the barbell up to their chest for the clean. And for the jerk, they need to pause, extend their arms and legs to lift the barbell above their head.

The elbow needs to be straight when the barbell is at the top.

In the Olympic weightlifting competition, there will be snatch and “clean and jerk.”

Snatch is one singular motion in which the weightlifter needs to lift the barbell above their head. Meanwhile, clean and jerk are what I mentioned before.

In the competition, the participants will have three snatch attempts and three clean and jerk attempts. In addition, the weightlifters are allowed to increase the weights for scoring.

It will be a fantastic showdown since some powerful guys out there will take the weights on their shoulders.

Olympics Weightlifting History

The history of the Olympics dates back to the early 1800s. But there have been a lot of speculations about the weightlifting category origin. The weightlifting history has been relevant in the Chinese scriptures, Greek carvings, and Egyptian records.

But modern weightlifting discipline started back in 1920. Long story short, the Olympic debut was in the 1930s. Meanwhile, the women’s weightlifting competition made its debut in 2000 Sydney. Now, it has been a part of the huge family sports in the Olympics. We’d expect such competitive events to take place in the upcoming Summer Olympics 2021.
