Olympic Water Polo Rules
FINA – Federation Internationale de Natation has set the standard rules for Olympic level water polo events. You can find the details of the water polo rules right on the official site of FINA.
The game involves 6-on-6 team players plus goalkeepers. In total, there are 7 members in each team. The duration of the game is four, 7-minute quarters. Each squad has 13 players or more. The substitutions are possible during the game.
The final goal is when the ball crosses the goal line.
There are also other valuations that the participants should consider, such as minor fouls, major fouls, swearing, brutal fouls, and so on. Finally, there will be medal rounds where the winner will take the gold medal.
Olympics Water Polo History
Back then, water polo took place in the lakes and rivers. Back then, a pig’s stomach was the primary material to make the ball for water polo. But not anymore. Rubber balls are the most common one. It started as an exhibition in the 1900 Olympic Games. Then the popularity rose in 1911. There were 12 countries’ teams that competed in the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games.
From 1928 to the 1980s, people across the globe had known Hungary as the best water polo nation.
